In this article we will detail the history of Aruba and some of the unique attractions the island has to offer.

History of Aruba

The first inhabitants of the island came here from Venezuela by sea. It was the Arawak Indians who had fled the neighboring continent to find peace and were constantly threatened by the attacks of the Caribbean tribes. Shortly after the discovery of the New World by Columbus, Spanish explorers discovered Aruba and made it a Spanish colony. It remained in this condition until it was taken over by the Dutch at the beginning of the 17th century. Until its independence in 1936, the island was a Dutch protectorate and continues to have links with the Netherlands. Dutch passports are owned by residents and in addition to the official Dutch language, they also speak Spanish and English.

The island of Aruba was discovered in 1499 during a Spanish expedition and finally conquered by the Dutch in 1636. The historical significance of Aruba became apparent in the era of economic prosperity, the island's global economy. There were a number of separate incidents that had to do with it. During the 19th century, the gold rush was at its peak, which in 1924 led to the opening of an oil refinery. In recent decades, tourism has grown explosively.

In 1986 Aruba became a member of the Netherlands Kingdom. Although a campaign was carried out for the island's complete independence, the activity was discontinued in 1996, as demanded by Aruba six years ago.
